Dear Judged
What's in the NameI’m a fifth-year attorney at a downtown law firm in New York.  I’m planning to start a firm of my own…  The problem: I don’t wanna call my firm Dirtbag (yeah, that’s my last name).  Any name
suggestions?

Dear imperial,

Dear Dirtbag,

Haha…  LMAO…  Sound like the name would definitely get a great deal of applause at the America's Worst Law Firm Names Awards (If at all there’s something coming up).  Please excuse me if I’m rude.  The law firm calling itself “Dirtbag, LLP” sounds hilarious.  I’m sure you’ll be able to hook up with some great clients with that name!  LOL!

My apologies for this rude opening.  The Judge understands your problem, but got carried away, owing to a heavy drinking session last night.  I’ll blame it on the hangover.  Let’s ponder over your grievous problem.  Personally, I feel there’s nothing wrong with your last name.  You can call your firm by the same name.  In fact, your name can become your USP while you advertise—Dirtbag, LLP: shit happens, we’re there to help.  Hey, I can be a copywriter!  The Judge chose the wrong profession.  Sigh!  If only I’d realized this 40 years back…

On a serious note, if you are keen on getting a good business, your law firm name plays a secondary role.  Brands like DLA Piper and Baker Botts top in the law firm rankings because of their excellent services and not their names.  However, one needs to be cautious as the name thus chosen will lay the foundation of a law practice.

If you still want to call you firm something else, let’s look at some options.  You can create threads on discussion board and consider the responses.  If you want no risks, then you can look for a serious name.Try joining some alphabets of your first and last name and see if it makes sense.  Maybe you could think of naming it on your spouse’s name.  You can even go unique by naming it with your first name.  And when you make it big, you can add a history column on your firm website about this dilemma and how you ended up with the xyz name.

This morning, I came across a < span>WSJ.com law blog that discusses “Law Firm Names That Are Funny”.  Topping the charts are name like Payne & Fears; MoFo; Low, Ball & Lynch; Smart & Biggar; Anwaltskanzlei Georg W. Busch; Butts & Johnson….  Couple of more that I came across while browsing: Harness, Dickey & Pierce (that’s my favorite coz it’s like a complete sentence); Cummings & Lockwood; Lawless & Lawless…  This topic has become the “talk of the net”, and I’m sure these firms will prove to be excellent rainmakers owing to their funny names!  The point to discuss is: do these law firms realize the humor behind their names or they’re so inwardly focused that they are blind to notice the outside world’s perception?

Looking at the abovementioned names, Dirtbag suddenly sounds logical and interesting to me.  Good luck with your name search…  Cackle, Giggle, Chuckle & Snigger!  Cheers!!
