Dear Judged
Liability factor?Your Honor:

I am a pro se litigant against a couple of big corporations.  The issue, at first, was minimal, until my due process rights were grossly affected, among other travesties.  As a result of this, I have been falsely arrested two times, have lost my job as a paralegal (have been since 1981, Tulane) suffered an illegal eviction, and other things.

Right now, I am in the First Circuit Court of Appeal, in Louisiana, and this will probably not call for oral hearings and more filings.

I have heard that it is not good business for law firms to hire someone like me.

All that said, do I really pose a liability?

Dear SophieBee,

You ask a serious question, so I have no choice but to be frank.  (You can still be Sophie.)  It doesn't matter whether you pose a liability or not.  All that matters is whether law firms think you do.

Put yourself in their shoes for a second:

1) You've been arrested twice.  It doesn't matter whether they were justified or not... it's in your record.  With all the legal problems that already happen involving people who work at law firms, even at the upper levels (Christensen Miller, anyone?), you can't entirely blame a firm for being wary about bringing in people who have already had problems before joining.  Heck, even professional sports teams are sometimes staying away from people who have been arrested; I can name a few players who have been selected much later than expected in the NBA and NFL drafts specifically because they had already had problems before entering their names for consideration.  So you can imagine that a law firm would do the same.  I'm not saying it's right, I'm not saying it's wrong... I'm just saying it is.

2) You’re a pro se litigant.  Even disregarding the pro se aspect of it, you're involved in two lawsuits.  I'm my inference skills are working, you're apparently the plaintiff in both.  Many companies will be wary about this; you've sued two companies already, and they don't want to be the third.  The only way for them to make sure of this is to stay far away from you.  Even most companies outside the legal field would be wary; a law firm would be especially wary.  They wouldn't want to involve themselves with someone who they have reason to believe is litigious (unless, of course, they were hiring you as a litigator, but that's a whole different story!)  Again, I'm not saying it's right, I'm not saying it's wrong...  I'm just saying it is.

Now, again, I don't know what has happened with or to you in the past.  It's always unfortunate when people get screwed by the legal system, and if that's what happened in your case, then I feel for you.  But you've got to accept the situation as it is.  You may find a firm to take a flyer on you, and they may or may not be glad that they did.  You may have better luck moving on from the legal field and finding something else you enjoy doing.  If you've been looking at large firms, you may have better luck with smaller firms.  Just think outside the box, and you'll find something.  You sound like a persistent kind of person, so just keep at it.  And if you win your pending case, well that's great and everything will hopefully improve.

So you asked a blunt question, and, well, that's the answer.  Good luck in finding a position that makes you happy, and don't let "the man" keep you down!
