Dear Judged
Which one to choose?I’m not able to
decide which firm I should make a move—Sidley, White & Case, or
Kirkland Ellis. Any tips on that Judge?

Dear imperial,
Lucky you have such great options! I would recommend you start keeping
track of your feelers sent to these firms immediately. All three firms are
good, but you need to find out your own priorities before deciding on
any.
Sidley Austin is a great firm to work with! Its 235-year
old legacy defines that this is an experienced firm that has worked on the
best of cases and that you can learn a lot working here. From what others
on Judged tell me, it has one of the best work environments and offers
great salary just like the other two! Kirkland Ellis is again an excellent
choice! It is selective about the kind it hires and so is White & Case,
but is overall a good firm from other angles that may or may not be
included within your priorities.
All the three firms offer
excellent salaries. And are great brand for you to begin working with! If
you are a recent grad and your GPA and other experience tells you that you
can get into either of these easily, then you should just go with the
flow. Whichever comes first on the way, pick it. The reason is that all
these three firms are equally good. Working in one would make you realize
what exactly falls under "your type" of firm. Later years you can easily
switch!
If you are a lateral with 2-5 years of experience, then
prioritize your options. Visit discussion boards and ask your counterparts
at these firms. Check on what is more important to you—salary,
work/life balance, fringe benefits, work environment…. And then
check which firms offer these in what ways. Different firms are right for
different people. My advice is that you should meet the people at each (if
you get a chance!), and see where you get the best "vibe"...
Define your own career objectives and goals first, and then visually size
yourself up against the likely competition you'll find at each firm.
Remember, that in everything in life, there's a gap between what you
expect and what you get. Recognizing the existence of that gap represents
maturity, and you can work to reduce the gap, only if in the first place,
you admit and accept it. You'll succeed anywhere provided you are
aware of this little secret.
I believe you should start moving
for all three, try to know everything about these firms... Find out if you
can tag up with a mentor anywhere, and then decide according to your own
priorities. Good luck there! Let the Judge know where you land up and how
you doing there! Cheers!
