Dear Judged
From teaching to practicingI have been an attorney for eighteen years. For the past six years I have
been teaching law rather than practicing. But now due to some reasons I
want to get back into practicing law.
Do you think I will be
able to find a recruiter who would employ me? Would it raise eyebrows as to
why I left practicing and turned to becoming a professor and now I want to
get back into practicing law again. I am not very keen on getting into a
very prestigious law firm but I don’t want to lose out on a fine
break. It has been quite a difficult road though looking for a realistic
opportunity as a lawyer. Do you think I will be able to make it?

Dear Unununium,
I think a lot of your
questions depend on the details of your particular situation: why you left
practice to teach, where you were teaching, why you want to get back in to
practice, and what kind of firm you’re looking to get in to.
Generally, teaching law is looked upon quite favorably by firms;
additionally, you must have quite a few connections in your legal community
if you’re teaching at a law school. You should capitalize on that.
And yes, I think recruiters would be more than happy to work with you. The
roadblocks that you’re running in to are probably due to the
saturated legal market, and have nothing to do with you. I
would suggest you contact a reputable recruiter who can put you in touch
with the right people.
