Dear Judged
Do I join the BigLaw?Hi Judged,I work in a small plaintiff firm where my work hours are more than flexible.I enjoy the work here (received various commendations). My problem is my salary.Total compensation nears 50k per year. I have been offered a job at a large New York firm for nearly double the current package but this involves 2-3 hours of commuting each way. Moreover, my counterparts in big firms tell me how they get screwed (no flexibility).I am mulling over the pros and cons.. Maybe you can suggest something..

Dear Unununium,

Nice name…very fitting. Anyways, your question boils down to one issue: money. The answer to this question would be completely different if you had given the impression that you were concerned with the growth of your career. But you said your concern was money, so the question you need to ask yourself is whether you’re willing to commute 6 hours a day (in addition to work a lot more hours) to double your salary. No doubt about it, a six figure salary is a great thing…but so is having a flexible job and a social life (flexibility and socializing are foreign concepts to most large law firm associates, in case you didn’t already know). They say money doesn’t buy happiness and I would tend to agree with them (whoever they are).  So if its money you are after, trust me, a big paycheck won’t make up for a six hour commute and long, crazy hours. Find a career that makes you happy, regardless of the compensation.
