Dear Judged
DilemmaI am a first-year associate working in a big law firm. My firm is
organizing New Year party this weekend and most of the big clients are
expected to attend... My problem – I haven’t attended such a
formal party before (this being my first job). Please advise on what to
wear.

Dear Unununium,
While a lesser Judge
would laugh off your question, I totally understand where you’re
coming from. As a woman at a large law firm, you have to be careful about
what you wear. At the office, it’s easy…suits are hard to mess
up. But these office holiday parties and happy hours are troublesome.
It’s hard to strike a balance between wearing something fun and
wearing something appropriate. If you’re having trouble figuring out
if your outfit is too fun, then here’s a general thumb rule for you
to follow: always fall on the side of being too appropriate. Yes,
I’m aware that equates to looking boring sometimes, but trust
me…its better to save the crazy outfits for non-firm occasions and
dress like a lawyer would for the office holiday party. This means nothing
mini, nothing low cut, and nothing that’s too tight. Because you
know the stigma of being the sluttish drunk associate from the
office party will haunt you for the rest of your tenure at the firm.
So cover up! That way, at the very worst, you’ll be known as
the drunk associate from the office party…
