The Best and the Worst

Now, we look to our list of Judged's highest and lowest ranked law firms of the week.

Last week's lowest ranked firm, Proskauer Rose, has rebounded from a very low score of 1.38 to a more respectable 2.3. Not too shabby.

Our reigning champ is Nutter McClennen & Fish. Last week they clocked in with a top score of 9.21. This week, they are up slightly to 9.27. Nutter also scores high on the Avery Index of Happiest Firms, where they came in second place after Upstate New York's Harter, Secrest & Emery.

Our lowest ranked firm of the week is Chadbourne & Parke, who came in with a score of 1.25. Chadbourne & Parke associates complain that while the major international firm offers quite competitive salaries, you'll have to work your ass off for it. Associates also cited a lack of formal training as a contributing factor to the firm's low score.

This is pretty bad

Remember that 12-year-old Florida kid who was convicted of brutally murdering a 9-year-old playmate and sentenced to life in prison? He got released on probation and immediately robbed a pizza delivery man. Now he's back in prison for a 30-year-stint.

Blogtastic Voyage

Each week, it seems, there is new evidence of the strong power the blogosphere has on the legal and academic communities. Evan Schaeffer's Legal Underground (http://www.legalunderground.com/) issued sort of an apology for a blog entry (http://www.legalunderground.com/2004/05/blog_y our_way_t.html) he wrote last year doubting the power of blogging for law school professors.

Opinio Juris (http://www.opiniojuris.org/posts/1145640100.sh tml) offered a thoughtful assessment of how blogging has changed scholarship. In response to "Blogging and the Transformation of Legal Scholarship" (http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstrac t_id=898168#PaperDownload) from the Harvard Law School conference on blogging, Roger Alford of Opinio Juris argued that as blogs become more acceptable as a form of scholarship, they will become more formal and less shorthand.

The law blogosphere is huge and growing every day. It could reach capacity, according to Alford; and at that point, it will be nearly impossible to get noticed with a new scholarly blog.

Pinched at the pump

Check this link out for a rather comprehensive analysis of the gas price problem. http://mauledagain.blogspot.com/2006_04_01_mau ledagain_archive.html#114607185795617226

Professor James Edward Maule of MauledAgain wrote a really cool blog entry about high gas prices. Maule is a smart guy, and the gas-price issue is convoluted, to say the least. So I'm not sure I understand the whole thing. I can tell, though, that his analysis is very comprehensive. He addresses all the different theories being bandied about as to how to resolve high gas prices, pointing out what's wrong with each. In the end, predictably, his conclusion is that there are no easy answers.
