After shooting a Reno, Nevada family court judge, Darren Mack went on the lam. Authorities suspected he had fled to Latin America. One place he was not expected to show up was on a popular law blog.

Police contacted the blogger behind The Legal Reader (http://www.legalreader.com/) to request data about someone who posted on the blog. The cops suspected that someone was fugitive Darren Mack.

Comments on The Legal Reader, claiming to be from someone who knew Mack intimately, disclosed financial information and details of Mack's motives in the shooting. The police were able to track the IP address to Mexico, where Mack was apprehended.

After The Legal Reader revealed the facts about their cooperation with the police in capturing Mack, other law bloggers came forward saying they had also received comments from that particular IP address which dealt with Darren Mack and the shooting of the Reno judge.

David Lat, the blogger who gained fame as the Article III Groupie from Underneath Their Robes (http://underneaththeirrobes.blogs.com/) is returning to the bright lights of the law blog universe after a brief respite.

For the past several months, Lat has been writing as part of the popular political blog Wonkette (www.wonkette.com). He announced this week that he will be leaving Wonkette and returning to law blogging full time with fellow blogger Elizabeth Spiers (http://elizabethspiers.com/).

Lat claims the new blog will focus on legal gossip.

Judge Donald M. Thompson, better known as the Oklahoma penis-pump judge, was found guilty on Thursday of indecent exposure and using a penis pump while presiding over trials. He was also accused of peeing in a trash can. That's the part that really makes me wonder.

The salacious aspects of the case have prompted a lot of media attention, as well as some seriously stupid dirty puns (stiff sentences, hung jury, etc). Robert J. Ambrogi of the Inside Legal Opinions blog (http://legalblogwatch.typepad.com/legal_blog_w atch/) expressed sympathy for the clearly troubled judge, whom he characterizes as having mental problems.

The judge protested his innocence until the bitter end, but the evidence was stacked against him. There were witnesses, and the CSI folks found DNA on his robe. His female law clerk, who accused him of exposing himself, said she was traumatized for life by the incident.

But it's all over now. So until Rush Limbaugh goes on trial for his illegal Viagra possession, we'll have to search for other sources of lame sex puns from the media.

In a recent article from www.law.com, Tricia Kasting writes that before the Internet became the primary resource for research, attorneys had to work harder.

While this might not sound that much different than the grandpa who spins yarns about having to walk six miles to school in the snow, Kasting claims that the framework of printed materials better prepares the mind for the challenges of legal research.

She writes:

"Print legal research has the advantage of an imposed conceptual framework of source materials and subject classification. It takes practice and time to learn how the system works, but once learned provides comprehensive research methodologies.

Query searches locate and retrieve relevant documents that, in a conceptual subject framework, may not appear related. Toss in electronic subscription databases and the World Wide Web, and the research process takes place in an open system that has a flexibility print can't match."

The vastness of the Internet as a medium doesn't focus the brain the way old fashioned research does, according to Kasting.

We've just uploaded a new batch of video games, and you can check 'em out on our games page (http://www.judged.com/jdgames.php).

It's been a while since we last added new games. By now, everybody is sick of Pongling and Treasure Hunt. Now we've got Celebrity Fight Club, Table Tennis (which is really just Pong), Curve Ball (sci fi racquet ball), and the Reflex Maze Game (which took your humble Judge like 10 minutes to figure out, but once I did, I mastered it).

Let us know if you like the new games or hate them.
