News from the frontlines of the associate-salary war

Bruce MacEwen of the blog Adam Smith, Esq. (http://www.bmacewen.com/blog/archives/2006/07/ the_war_for_talent.html) has an analysis of what is driving the “war for talent� and why it’s worse now than ever before. MacEwen identified a decade-old survey that claimed the retirement of the baby boomers would mean less eligible employees. He also points out that the free flow of information on the Internet makes it more likely that an associate would jump ship as soon as he or she spies a better opportunity on the horizon.

Some say a lack of flexibility and dull law firm lifestyles are leading attorneys to leave their firms by the droves, but MacEwen isn’t so sure. Turning back to the old survey, he reveals that flexibility and lifestyle aren’t even in the top 10 on the list of contributing factors to low levels of job satisfaction. According to MacEwen, people leave their firms for reasons relating to:

* firm values and culture (58%)
* freedom and autonomy (56%)
* exciting challenges (51%)
* a well-managed firm (50%)
* career advancement and growth (39%)
* respect for lifestyle (14%)
* job security (8%)
* acceptable pace and stress (1%)

So law firm values and culture--not long, grueling hours or boring work--are apparently fueling the growing associate attrition rates.

More humble bloggers make good

Ana Marie Cox, formerly of the blog Wonkette (www.wonkette.com) has been named the new Washington Editor of Time magazine's website (www.time.com). This news comes to us from The Huffinton Post (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/eat-the-press/20 06/07/27/ana-marie-cox-named-washi_e_25912.html).

I guess she technically wasn't a law blogger, but she was close enough to add to the growing list of law bloggers who were able to turn their modest Internet celebrity into prestigious legit gigs with huge salaries. The announcement comes on the heels of Anonymous Lawyer [http://anonymouslawyer.blogspot.com/] Jeremy Blachman’s novel being published to rave reviews. Diehard fans of Blachman’s website may be upset to find that most of the content in the book comes directly from his blog.

The question on everyone's lips is what does this mean for the Judge. Could he get a gig as a fluffer on 60 Minutes?

The triumphant return of de Judge

I have been out of town for two days but am now back. I know everybody missed me terribly. But there is no need to kill yourself just yet. The Judge has returned safe and sound.

Sorry for the absence, gang. I was cleaning out my garage, when my life-size marble statue of Earl Warren fell down on my and crushed my spine. I'm okay now, I'm taking vitamins. But I was stuck underneath Earl Warren for two days. Eventually, I started to go mad and began engaging in conversations with the stone Warren. He revealed to me that he was, in fact, the one who killed JFK. He also mentioned that it's about time for a new Bonnie Hunt sitcom.

So anyway, I'm back. I see you have all been very bad while I was away. You're not allowed to appoint a new Judge. In the event of my death, you are all to be entombed with me as living slaves for the underworld.

Requiem for a law blogger

The most talked about law blog issue of this week and last week has been the firing of Denise Howell from Reed Smith. Denise was behind the popular law blog Bag and Baggage (http://bgbg.blogspot.com). In her final blog entry, she breaks the news that she's out of a job and that she will be spending more time with her family. She went out with dignity though, and her last blog post (http://bgbg.blogspot.com/2006/07/have-aeron-wi ll-travel.html) is bittersweet.

The fallout on the blogosphere was immediate and, a few weeks later, still going strong. Robert Ambrogi of Law.com's Blog Network kept a list of all the blogs writing about Denise's firing (http://legalblogwatch.typepad.com/legal_blog_w atch/2006/07/bloggers_react_.html). Justin Patten of the Human Law blog (http://www.human-law.org/humanlaw/) says that Howell, one of the founding mothers of law blogging, was just too creative and cutting edge to fit in with a big scary law firm like Reed Smith. According to legend, it was Howell who coined the term "blawg."

While some questioned Reed Smith's wisdom in letting her go (http://legalblogwatch.typepad.com/legal_blog_w atch/2006/07/lessons_from_an.html), others wondered if her termination wasn't evidence economic hardships at the firm (http://www.denniskennedy.com/blog/2006/07/is_t his_what_they_teach_at_reed_smith_univers.html). Still others were happy to just celebrate Denise and her contribution to the blawgosphere. Ernie the Attorney (http://www.ernietheattorney.net/) even threw her an online baby shower.

Howell has remained quiet about her future prospects, but she says she will make sure whatever she does next will be something that satisfies her.

Blog round-up

According to a new poll conducted by Pew Internet (http://www.pewinternet.org/PPF/r/186/report_di splay.asp) most bloggers blog for personal use and write about their daily foibles. The study revealed that they reach a small audience but discuss widely diverse subject matters.

Professional bloggers are very much the minority. Also in the minority are those who blog about politics, entertainment, current events, or technology. Most of America's 12 million bloggers do it just to keep in touch with family and friends. The famous cele-bloggers, those whose blogs garner the most traffic, constitute less than a quarter of the entire blogosphere.

While 12 million sounds like a lot, that's only 8% of all known adult Internet users. Compare that to the 57 million who regularly read blogs, and you get a better idea of the popularity of blogs. There is little difference between the number of male bloggers and female bloggers, but a majority of blogs are written by people under the age of 30.
