This true story was emailed to the Judge by her best friend (believe it or not, the Judged actually has friends), who for the sake of anonymity we’ll call Law Girl. Law Girl is a 3L at a top US Law School who is currently participating in an Elder Law Clinic at her school. Law Girl holds open office hours at the University Hospital’s Geriatric clinic (no joke). Law Girl reports: Last Friday afternoon, I was holding sitting in my office when an 85 year old woman literally fell in the doorway of my office. After I helped her up and gave her a glass of water, she told me her name was Betsy and showed me a traffic ticket that she had just received.  She got a ticket from the University police for reckless driving in the parking garage. I asked her what she did and she told me: “I’m high on prednisone. I don’t know what I’m doing anymore”. I ignored the fact that I didn’t think it was possible to get “high” off prednisone, and told Betsy that if she planned on contesting the ticket, she shouldn’t mention being “high” on anything in court. Betsy wanted me to represent her, but I had to turn her down, since Elder Law Clinic doesn’t do traffic court. Before she left, Betsy said she thought she’d give the clinic a try, stating, “If it’s free, it’s for me!” Ah, you gotta love those free clinic clients…three cheers for stoned senior citizens!!!

I found this article really interesting. Make no mistake, my
opinion of Karl Rove is already defined, but the article really made me think:
given the events of the past year and a half, why is Rove so confident?

So you're at a restaurant, and the seafood pasta you ordered doesn't have as much seafood as you'd hoped.  Do you:

a) say "Well, that's life," and eat it anyway?
b) talk to your server, and either get a few more shrimp thrown on or send it back and order something else?
c) eat the shrimp and scallops off the top, then call the server and their manager over to complain, get into a fight, and leave paying only a $3 tip on a $46 bill?

"He said he couldn't look himself in the mirror if he paid full price for such substandard fare."

For some reason, Angellino's Italian Restaurant took issue with Ralph Paul's choice of (c), and a lawsuit was born.  (http://www.sptimes.com/2006/10/05/Tampabay/5_s hrimp__5_scallops_.shtml)  But while there's been the usual discussion in the legal community (and, one presumes, in the waitstaff community) about Who Was Right, Carolyn Elefant over at Legal Blog Watch observes (http://legalblogwatch.typepad.com/legal_blog_w atch/2006/10/who_is_the_myst.html) that the real question might be "who's this mystery $500/hr Manhattan lawyer defending the guy?"

I for one think it'd be worth $500 an hour to have to defend a man who sees a $15.99 entree as a personal cause.  At any rate, a little later in the article the name at least one of Paul's lawyers is given as John Lauro, of Lauro Litigation.  (http://laurolawfirm.com/jsp3180097.jsp)

The entree Paul ordered is called "Shrimp and Scallop Verdura."

"Verdura in Italian," defense lawyer John Lauro told the jury in all seriousness, "means true."

Actually, it means "vegetables." Verita means truth.

Apparently he's magna cum laude from Georgetown, too.  And yet he doesn't seem to recognize one of the best known words in Latin?

"Shrimp and Scallop Truth."  It's a tough dish to digest.

The JD Bliss Blog (yes, that's really what it's called) reports (http://www.jdblissblog.com/2006/10/success_sto ry_l.html) that Len Leeds, of Leeds Morelli & Brown, P.C., has just released a his first album of old pop songs and jazz standards.  Soooomebody's been taking David E. Kelley shows a little too seriously, it seems.  Evidently the release is meant to raise public awareness about cancer (How, exactly?  Shush, don't ask questions, it's a Good Cause.)  It's titled From Law Suits to Love Songs.  Which would suggest that one of the songs included should be "Makin' Whoopee," (http://www.songmeanings.net/lyric.php?lid=353082210 7858552082) but alas, no.  If you're curious, you can listen on his website.

"Lawsuits to Love songs is a vibrant testament to the passion and drive that is Len's signature style."

Okay, then.

My devoted readers (yes, I'm imagining that I have any) will have sorely missed my posting yesterday, whilst I was trapped under a collapsed bookshelf full of legal briefs.  The doctors who set my poor, arthritic bones have assured me that the injuries have not exascerbated my carpal tunnel, but if for some unknown reason I miss another entry, I encourage you, the readers of this blog, to feel free to construct a post using this template.
