I couldn’t resist sharing this with you guys…

I’m sure by now you’ve all heard that the Dewey Orrick merger was called off. But the question remains why? Such a merger would have obviously proved greatly beneficial for both firms. We can only speculate if it’s really pension issues that caused the demise of the merger, or if it’s something else. Anyone who has ever worked at a large law firm is well aware of the fragile and oversized nature of partners’ egos. You have to wonder if this merger fell apart simply because of too many self possessed partners who were unwilling to compromise their power and positions. One can only wonder…

Happy New Year! 2006 was a great year for legal blogs.  So many ridiculous legal stories and only 52 articles to sum everything up for you guys…that’s not easy.  But for your sake and mine, I can only hope that 2007 will prove to be just as colorful as a year for Judged Blogs.  Judging from this week’s blogs, I think it will be.

In almost every instance, I think people would say that they do not want to be discriminated against.  Not at work, not in society.  Not based on gender or based on race. That’s a pretty hard rule to find an exception to.  But there is one instance in which most people (myself included) would hope to be discriminated against.  And that instance is jury duty.  There is nothing worse than being forced to miss work just so you can sit and listen to a pointless lawsuit. (My personal experience with jury duty: a civil litigation suit in which a man who had ten nose jobs was suing his plastic surgeon for deforming his face. No joke.)  So that’s why when I read about how a court approved blocking jurors based on profession on How Appealing [http:/ /howappealing.law.com/010307.html#020867], I smiled.  Apparently, you can’t veto a juror based on race or gender, but you can veto a juror based on their profession.  I can only hope that I would get bounced from a jury because I’m a lawyer.  That would be one positive thing that resulted from me getting a law degree…

Do you know what would make coming to work everyday easier for me? If I could bring my dog to work with me, I’d be a happy camper. Laugh if you will, but I know quite a few solo practitioners who do just that. Apparently, I’m not the only one who feels the need to bring their dog everywhere.  At Crime and Federalism [http://federalism.typepad.com/crime_f ederalism/2007/01/metoo_in_court_.html], I read a story about a plaintiff who wanted to bring her dog with her on to the witness stand. Why, you may ask?  Well, she claims she’s suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome and she needs her dog with her constantly to remain calm.  No word on whether the court gave her permission to do so, but I’m going to guess that this request is probably not going to go over well with the Judge.

On that note, I’ll let you go for this week; I’m sure you all have plenty of working waiting for you after the holidays. But make sure you stop by next week to see what’s going on in the world of legal blogging!

Rbrown thinks about football; my old colleague secretly read magazines at his desk; I come up with an excuse to go to Walgreen’s everyday just to get out of the office. What do you all do to survive a day at the office? Yes, I know we’re lawyers and we all have a lot (probably too much) work to do, but that doesn’t stop any of us from finding a way to waste time.  I’m sure you all have some sort of secret habit or ritual that helps you make it through the day. Write in and share…don’t worry, it’s completely anonymous, the senior partners won’t find out!

Apparently, in Mexico, they have a theme park that simulates the experience of crossing the boarder into the U.S. Is this for real? People actually pay to do this? I thought theme parks were supposed to be fun; you know, tea cups, bumper cars…definitely not barbed wire fences and running through the mud. Then again, I guess this might be a better option than hanging out with drunken American college students in Cancun.
