This jury sounds priceless…

Ok, I know this isn’t related to law in the least, but since I’m a Superfan and so many have you have written in about football, I figure that it’s ok to dedicate one blog to the Bears (and plus, if I’m the Judge, I figure I should be allowed this minor indiscretion and abuse of authority). I’m in a state of shock right now because they’re going to the Superbowl…the last time this happened, I was five and everyone was doing the Superbowl Shuffle.  Who do you think is going to win…the Bears or the Colts?

This week, the legal blogs are all discussing warning labels and mass tort liability.  Now, I now what you’re thinking, and you’re right: Inside Legal Blogs usually doesn’t touch upon real or serious legal issues.  But don’t worry, this week is no exception; I’ll always find a way to mock even the most serious legal issues.  If nothing else, you can depend on me for that!

At Overlawyered [http://www.overlawyered.com/2007/01/john_ edwards_on_wacky_warnings.html] , I came across the following excerpt:

"[Edwards & Kirby partner David Kirby] had asked [the defendant's chief engineer] a fairly straightforward question: 'Would you agree that the manufacturer of a product has an obligation to inform all of the users of its products of all the dangers that are known that are associated with the use of their product?'

"'I don't believe that.' The reply was chilling."

I don’t know how “chilling” this response is (personally, I agree with the defendant’s chief engineer), but I really appreciate the melodrama that using the word “chilling” adds to the excerpt.
The discussion continued over warning labels was continued at the Mass Tort Litigation Blog [http://lawprofessors.typepad.com/m ass_tort_litigation/2007/01/overwarning.html], which highlighted some the stupidest warning labels I’ve ever read in my entire life. Some of my favorites included (and yes, these are real warning labels): “Don’t try to dry your phone in a microwave oven” and “Never use an open flame or lit match to check fuel level”. My question is who writes these warning labels? Who would think to warn someone against putting a cell phone in a microwave? It sounds like corporations are hiring stoned college students to write warning labels for them.

Finally, The Volokh Conspiracy also weighed in on the issue…

People have been writing in a lot recently and asking me about work attire: what’s appropriate, how casual can casual Fridays be, how expensive their suits have to be, etc. And two thoughts come to my mind. First, when did lawyers become so fashion conscious? Granted, I’m a woman and expect these sorts of questions from other woman attorneys…but a lot of men have been asking about what to wear to work, too. You know our society has become overrun with metrosexuals when lawyers are concerned with whether their suits are stylish enough. And secondly, where are all these cute, metrosexual, well-dressed guys? They’re definitely not working in my building…I kind of wish they were. That might be enough to motivate me to get ready for work for a change!

Yesterday, Obama announced his intention to run for President in 2008, and everyone knows Hilary Clinton is planning for the same.  This is obviously a huge turning point in American politics, but the question remains, which one of these two, if either, will be able to win over the Democratic Party?  And is the country ready for a female or African-American president? We hope the answer is yes, but really, only time will tell…
