A great article…

Did you guys all catch the SAG awards yesterday night?  I didn’t.  With the Golden Globes, People’s Choice Awards, and the SAG’s (which stands for Screen Actors Guild) in addition to the Oscars, you’ve got to wonder why there are so many awards shows…especially since they all address the same ten movies over and over again.  The Oscars are boring enough, and the last thing I need to see every Sunday night in February are bored, coked out celebrities dressed up in designer clothes pretending to be interested in their peers’ work. Who actually watches these awards shows?

Well, it’s official…the Bears are going to the Superbowl! Can you believe it? I’m definitely in shock.  This team may not be as much fun as the team twenty years ago (don’t lie, you know you all loved the Fridge and the Superbowl Shuffle), but it’s still pretty great news. At this point, you’re probably thinking, yea, that’s nice, but what does the Superbowl have to do with the law? Believe it or not, there is a connection there. We all know that there are some die hard football fans out there, who are willing to do anything to watch their team play. I read about such a fan on May it Please the Court.

This particular defendant was so set on watching the Saints play that he actually filed a motion in court to delay his hearing so he could watch the game. The best part? The court actually granted the motion! It’s a shame that the Saints didn’t actually make it to the Superbowl, but at least everyone got to watch them lose…(sorry I had to rub it in).

Maybe you’re not a football fan, and you’re not so interested in the Superbowl. Say you’re in to other extracurricular activities…like extreme sports.  If you’re in to something like jumping off buildings, I have a word of advice for you: be careful. Not just careful for your safety, but careful that you don’t get prosecuted for reckless endangerment. According to QuizLaw, professional stunt jumper Jeb Corliss was charged with reckless endangerment after (successfully and safely) jumping off the Empire State Building. According to the police and prosecutors who charged him, by jumping off the building, he was risking the lives of bystanders who may be walking below on the street.  The court apparently did not agree with this logic and dismissed the charges against Corliss. Lucky guy…let’s just hope he stays this lucky and doesn’t die jumping off another building.

Let’s say you’re just really low key…your hobbies don’t include extreme sports or watching football. Let’s say your hobbies include more relaxed activities, like…smoking pot. If that’s the case, then I have good news for you. On the DUI blog, I read about a new study which found that smoking pot does not impair your ability to drive a motor vehicle. While for most of this, this seems like the kind of activity that people should be charged with reckless endangerment for, it must be pretty good news for stoners who want to make a run to the Taco Bell drive thru to quell their munchies…

It seems like all the associates I know are either dating or engaged to another lawyer (I’m excluding my jerk co-workers who have married trophy wives). I guess the reason why lawyers always end up together is obvious: because they spend so much time at the office (or even worse, at horrible state bar functions), they really don’t meet anyone who doesn’t practice law. The real question I have is, don’t these people want to get away from the law and other lawyers? Isn’t 60+ hours a week enough?

Bush wants the world to give the efforts in Iraq time for things to pan out. Considering how long its already been, I wonder how many of the people who initially supported this war are completely fed up with the war and Bush. I also wonder if the backlash against the war is strong enough for impact the next presidential elections…
