These guys have more drama than 8th grade girls…and that’s really saying something!

So they released Hannibal Rising. I didn’t see it and I’m obviously not going to watch it (too gory). From the looks of this review, it doesn’t seem like I’m missing much. But my question is, how many more of these sequels/prequels can they come up with? Is Hollywood incapable of leaving a character alone? Obviously, we all know the answer to that, but still. I really wonder who is going to go see this movie-what more could there possibly be to Hannibal? For the next installment, there’s going to be no material left…they’ll have to resort to Hannibal vs. Chucky (anyone remember Chucky, that satanic doll?). Sadly, I bet people would still actually pay to see that…

So how was your weekend? Are you stuck freezing to death in the frigid Midwest? Or are you one of the few lucky souls who was out in Miami watching the Superbowl? Regardless of what where you are in the country, I’m going to bet most of you are stuck inside the office (or class). So I’ll cut out the formalities and get to the interesting stuff.

This has been a great week for political commentary on the legal blogs. This, of course, also means that it was a horrible week for politicians, Democrats and Republicans alike. To begin with, Crime and Federalism [http://federalism.typepad.com/crime_f ederalism/2007/02/more_than_a_tou.html]published this less than flattering piece on John Edwards. All I can say is, ouch. It’s true that John Edwards loves to cater to his party, but hello, what politician doesn’t do the exact same thing? You can’t just fault Edwards for this kind of behavior, it’s the typical M.O. for all politicians. My favorite lines: “When other lawyers were working in legal aid clinics, Edwards was cream-skimming in the market in human suffering”, and “while some served the poor and down-trodden as young men, Edwards got rich off the suffering of others”. Honestly, I can’t say that I really disagree with either of those statements, but that’s some pretty harsh criticism.

And that’s just the beginning of the political fun for this week. I’m sure you all heard about Cully Stimson, the deputy assistant secretary of defense for detainee affairs, and his lovely commentary on attorneys who represent terrorists, covered by Above the Law [http://www.abovethelaw.com/2007/02/charles_ cully_stimson_you_wont.php]. Obviously, his remarks were stupid (don’t these people have aides who brief them on what they should and shouldn’t be saying?), but leaving that aside…what kind of name is Cully Stimson? That sounds like the name of Yosemite Sam’s cartoon nemesis.

What would a weekly roundup of sarcastic political commentary be without mocking the President’s inability to master (or even come to grips with) the English language? My former Constitutional Law Professor, Ann Althouse, noted President Bush’s humorous (well, humorous for George W. Bush) speech while addressing the Democratic Party on her blogspot, Althouse [http://althouse.blogspot.com/20 07/02/bush-says-war-sapping-our-soul.html#comments]. What do you think, did he actually use the phrase “sapping our soul?

With that question, I’ll let you get back to your work/homework/procrastination. Don’t forget to come back next week and waste more time with us!

Maybe it’s just because I’m a woman, but I thought this article was fascinating.  Who would have thought that O’Connor and Ginsberg would open themselves up like this and talk about the isolation that comes with being a woman in a male dominated field?

These days, it seems like rehab will absolve anyone in the public spotlight of their sins. To me, this would totally make sense if the wrongdoings included drug use or something along those lines. But my question is, how did rehab cure Mel Gibson of Anti-Semitism (yes, I know he had a drinking problem, but I’m not convinced that’s the reason behind his derogatory words)? How is “counseling” going to help that guy on Grey’s Anatomy learn to stop hating gay people? And as for Mayor Gavin Newsom’s recent indiscretions…I don’t think rehab is going to do anything for him. Obviously, I understand that this is all PR spin, but is anyone in the American public actually buying it?
