Who says lawyers aren’t loyal?  The market this week buzzed with news of the former  Governor of New York, Mr. George E. Pataki, joining Chadbourne & Parke as a counsel.  Coming from Pataki, this was no surprise, for as Governor, he had been quite vocal in support of renewable energy, and Chadbourne & Parke targets that practice area. Rather than sitting on the sidelines, influencing, and networking, he wishes to practice actively on environmental issues, and alternative sources for energy.  That’s really admirable, though I expected him to run for President instead.  However, the best part of the news  is that Pataki’s chief of staff John Cahill will also join the same firm as counsel.  Now, that’s something!  When Pataki served as partner at Plunkett & Jaffe, guess who else worked as a partner there from 1974 to 1987?  When Pataki left the firm, Cahill left too.  When Pataki became Governor in 1994, Cahill became his chief of staff. Now, when Pataki rejoins a law firm, Cahill will naturally accompany him .  Seems this duo is inseparable!

One thing you’ve got to admit about Michael Oxley: he’s an excellent farmer.  First off, he instinctively recognized the past decade’s economic scandals as the fertile field in which to sow his crop.  Next, he planted the Sarbanes-Oxley Act on that field which created headaches for many market segments, but was the greatest gift to one,- the legal market.  Now, he is set to join the Washington, D.C. office of Baker Hostetler as Of-Counsel on March 12 to reap the benefits of what he sowed.

According to a survey assessing key elements of the In-House Counsel/Outside Counsel Relationship for 2006, Association of Corporate Counsel and Serengeti jointly found that 86% out of 169 surveyed companies thought compliance of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act was their primary headache.  The same companies, after reporting legal costs as their primary headache through last four years, today report the Sarbanes-Oxley headache as scarier than legal costs.  The harvest is ready for Mr. Oxley in his new avatar as Of-Counsel.  For the first time in centuries, companies aren’t complaining about legal costs; they’ve got Sarbanes-Oxley to worry about.

Welcome back! Last week, I was in a bad mood, bitching about the weather and such. Never mind the fact that I’m still not feeling like Mary Poppins and it snowed like
crazy this weekend (in March!); I keep trying to tell myself that spring is
just around the corner. Unfortunately, even that isn’t enough to keep me in a
good mood. Oh well; in a strange way, I guess that’s all the better for you
guys; after all, if I were a happy fulfilled person who didn’t feel the need to
make biting and sarcastic comments about almost everything, this column
wouldn’t be much fun to read, would it?

This week, I discovered a new blog, Dizzy does it
[http://dizzydoesit.blogspot.com/2007/03/is- it-uncool-to-be-smart.html],
which like, discusses all the totally major issues, like how going to law
school is so awesome because it allows you buy more expensive purses, and even
more importantly, if its “cool to be smart” (no, I’m not kidding). Anyways,
there’s a lengthy discussion about how girls can get away with the “smart ,
inexperienced vibe”, acting like a “typical smart person”, building blocks, and
even some thin connection b/w all this and the law. Whatever, I didn’t
understand any of it, but I just love the fact that one of these girls finally
admitted she went to law school b/c she wanted to wear fancy outfits for the
rest of her life!

I also discovered an, um, interesting article on JD Bliss [http:// www.jdbliss.com/e_article000334430.cfm]
about…the niche practice of Karate Law. Apparently, David Kaufmann, a Professor
at George Mason University Law School of Law parlayed his life long love of
karate in to a sustainable legal practice. Okay, in all fairness, this guy does
sound pretty cool (much cooler than most of my law school professors, at least),
but I can’t help but find humor in the niche practice of “Karate law”; what’s
next? Trampoline law? Stiletto law? By the way, if you do practice in some sort
of strange niche area, please write in and let me know, I’d love to hear about
it (and I promise not to mock you!).

That’s about all the randomness I can handle for this week. Join me again next week; who knows, if the weather’s warmer, I might be in a better mood…its unlikely, but hey, anything’s possible!

In Honor Of His Great Revelations:Today’s blog is dedicated to the great and enlightened Yahia Ragheb Daqrui, president of the judges’ syndicate in Egypt.  As quoted in the 3rd March issue of Khaleej Times Online, Mr. Daqrui, extended his staunch support to a recent landmark judgment barring Egyptian women from joining the bench, as according to him, anything otherwise would have been un-Islamic and against Shariat.  He asked plaintively whether it was appropriate for a woman to be alone with two or more males, for if allowed, a woman judge would continually be in such situations while deliberating with male judges.  He also revealed that a woman judge will certainly become pregnant, and by doing so would cast an impact on the prestige of the judiciary and the judge’s public image (news to me).  Further, the shock of the public at the sight of a woman judge needed serious consideration.

One cannot agree less Mr. Daqrui, for your existence by itself goes a long way to prove that motherhood, somewhere, sometimes, can be quite unspeakably shameful.  You have placed yourself right beside the justices of the U.S. Supreme Court who in their judgment in 1873 affirmed the 1869 decision denying Myra Bradwell entry to the Illinois bar.  Their judgment similarly revealed, “The paramount destiny and mission of women are to fulfill the noble and benign offices of wife and mother” (Bradwell v. Illinois, 83 U.S. 130 AT 141 (1873).  But instead of learning from such benevolence, the kitabia women of this country have worked against the natural order of things, and over the last 134 years managed to intrude everywhere from the bar to the bench to the speaker’s office, and now one of them is running for presidency of this country.  How utterly despicable and shameful.
